More than sardines...

As one of our first entries for our new site we wanna look back to a recent mini-tour we were lucky to pull off in November. Our dear friend Illidio Chaves was celebrating his birthday and decided to bring us over for an extended weekend. That already gave the trip a little somethng extra on top of the fact that we would hit 3 portuguese cities in 4 days. Besides being a leading entity in EBM and Industrial music (which makes for endless post-gig discussions/chants of joy with Marco) he is a prolific promoter in Portugal and as far as I can see the absolute go-to guy. As a a producer and dj he is known as Expander.

So on day one we arrive in Lisbon and get picked up by Nuno who is the most lovely guy. We decide to go to the Old Town and have some fresh fish because we are starving. After a weird drive through many sloping roads of all sizes we turn into a back-alley with tiny restaurants and find ourselves sitting in the sun with shades on, fresh fish and a delightful bottle of cold white wine on the table. Can somebody pinch me ? I think I fell asleep at the gate at rainy Tegel. No, it's real... lovin' it. That night we are supposed to play at the infamous Lux club. Here is where we encounter for the first what I have later come to call the 'portugese way'. I will specify shortly. But before a comment on bad live-acts. Being part of a live-act myself I always try to be not to explicitly judgemental on other acts performances because even if it might just be differing taste of music it could be conceived as cocky. But in this case there is no way out. We saw one if the biggest bull-shit performances I have seen in a long time. This was some spin-off project of an apparently well known Hip Hop/ Funk band from Lisbon where two band members decided to start a Techno-Nu Rave duo. We went to check the final 20 minutes and that was stunning. The guys had a stage built out of their band name, were wearing motorcycle masks as if they were some radical rebels and then just dropped 'Aerodynamik' by Daft Punk into a super boring track of their own. What ? They didn't even have the decency to choose something from Homework which would have still been lame. Then again some kind of drum machine preset with no wit and then bang (!)....'Funky Cold Medina' ... autsch. Another useless, banging original track and then.... Black Sabbath... raised fists and off they go. Jeeesus fucking christ. I really don't mind well made mash-ups and I love if somebody weaves in a classic or breaks up musical genres in a set. But that just hurt. And it wasn't live.

Anyways, so these dudes are on before the club night as a concert and word is we do soundcheck whilst the guys from Lux take aways the concert stage, rearrange the floor, etc. The club is supposed to open at 1 am; concert supposed to end at midnight. At around 1:02am Black Sabbath is still ringing in my ears. Both of us are now pretty concerned for the soundcheck because things are running late. I know that south of the Alps people are more relaxed and less obsessed with time-frames. But for us that usually ends up like this: 'Yeah, don't worry, we do soundcheck later' ...and then later the club owner comes and says: 'Sorry guys, too late. We're openeing the doors, no soundcheck tonight... gotta start making money.' So, germans as we are we start to be a bit uneasy. But alas... here comes the portuguese way. To make a long story short... at 2am we are just about to finish soundcheck, the staff has tidied up the place and the club is consequently empty. Nobody seems worried that the club will open over an hour later than usual. 3am... club open, not full - not empty, some people dancing. 4:20am ... we just started playing 10 min ago... the place is rammed ! The soundsystem is a beauty, great party, 100 points.

Next day we move to Coimbra, which is a student town between Porto and Lisbon. Its is also the home town of Ilidio so we will get to see his house in the boonies. We are all a bit acheing from the first night out but we didn't go crazy so we can shake it off on the highway with a first beer. On arrival we go to a great restaurant called 'Munich' which serves the best portuguese food I had had so far. Weird name but who cares. This is the instant when portugese cuisine officially surpassed spanish food in my personal food charts. Along with us on the whole trip is Billy Dallesandro who is a grade A travelling companion. If you ever have the chance to go on the road with him... do it ! You will have a good time... guaranteed. He's a close friend of Ilidio and took the weekend off to come along with us for the extended birthday weekend. A pretty nice move I have to say...

We are finished with dinner and the usual questions.... 'When does  the club open ?' 'Midnight.' 'What time is now ?' '11:45pm.'.. 'Ok, well then lets go to soundcheck.' This time we are prepared... Finally they open the club around 2am and by 4am there are not many people in. This club is pretty much the opposite of Lux. A small student place, with a PA that looks like from the 80ties, everything a bit improvised and you kinda feel that some commited guys are trying to do something at a club where the owner doesn't give a shit about the music. We will start at 4:30 and already made peace with the fact that we will play to 50 people and enjoy hanging out with Ilidio's friends. 5:30... the place is rammed, we extend for an extra 30 min because it's so much fun.

After catching some rest we wander through the city and meet the gang for dinner. The body feels damaged but the spirits are up. Food is getting better by the day and then we take the train to Porto. This was an improvised move because Ilidio's car crapped out in the morning but it turned out to be a winner. A beer costs 1,50 € in the train restaurant so we were in for a hilarious trip.  We are travelling as a gang of 5 because Manu is with us. As the rest of the gang he is fantastic company whilst being a great dj. He opened on all nights we played and is dedicated to pushing the Dubstep scene of Portugal.  A few beer and a lot more funny stories later we arrive in Porto. The club is called ‘Gare’ and hence it is located at the train station. So no extra hassle's, no traffic jams, nobody has to drive, no security check, a little less toxic footprint. Train rides are underestimated.

The guys that run Gare were also super nice so it was starting to get frightening that everything actually would be working fine throughout the weekend. Very unusual. Of course sound-check was late and the night was great. The best part came at the end though. The club has a tiny second floor which is actually just another bar with own music. At a late moment of the night Billy convinced the dj to start busting out classics of different genre's. It started as a joke but half an hour later the floor was exploding. The guy played mostly old disco and r&b cuts and people were on fire. Musically we were in a 'Just-the-hits-college-party-zone' but it was just too funny to be a smart-ass. We danced till the feet were steaming. This went on for a while and after hanging out with the cleaning staff it was time to grab the remaining few hours of sleep to survive the flight back.

A hell of a trip ! Thanks - first an foremost - to Ilidio for making it happen. But also to Billy, Manu, Nuno and the rest of the Soniculture compound for making it a great ride. The portugeuse showed how things can be very relaxed but still wonderfully well organised. I am impressed. We’ll be back for more sardines, Fado and firewater…
